Best Medicare Supplement Plans 2021
It’s easy to focus on the current year and forget to plan ahead for your needs for the upcoming year.
2021 may seem like it is too far away for you to bother planning health insurance coverage for that year, but it is important that seniors look ahead as they choose their medical coverage.
The best Medicare Supplement plans 2021 has to offer are going to be a big help to many seniors, providing them with peace of mind and keeping their healthcare costs low.
What Are Medicare Supplements?
Supplemental insurance is coverage that Medicare has designed, but Medicare isn’t the one selling it.
Medicare only oversees these plans, ensuring that the private insurance companies that sell them to seniors are offering the right coverage and offering real value with them.
Supplement plans are made to work in tandem with an Original Medicare plan.
If you don’t have that basic Medicare plan, then the Supplement plan isn’t going to work for you yet.
Supplemental insurance specifically fills in the gaps in coverage created by basic Medicare, and that can be very helpful for seniors who are not having an easy time of trying to pay for their medical care.
Medicare Supplements can cover a variety of medical expenses for you.
There are eight of these plans available to most seniors, and each of those plans offers somewhat different coverage.
You can purchase plans with high or low coverage and find coverage that gives you exactly what you need for your situation.
Medicare Supplements can cover you for some or for all of the following healthcare benefits:
- Blood- Taking care of three pints of blood, as the rest are all covered by Original Medicare
- Foreign Travel Exchange- Covering you for up to 80% of the cost of being transported outside the US for emergency medical care
- Nursing Care Coinsurance- Covering some nursing costs not already covered by Original Medicare
- Medicare Part A Copay- Taking care of your fee that is usually expected for every time you visit the hospital
- Medicare Part B Copay- Taking care of your fee for every visit to the doctor’s office or the emergency room
- Medicare Part A Hospice Coinsurance- Covering hospice care costs not covered by Original Medicare
- Medicare Part A Annual Deductible- Covering the $1,408 fee that has to be paid each year for receiving Medicare Part A services
- Medicare Part B Annual Deductible- Covering the $198 annual fee that has to be paid before you can get any coverage from Medicare Part B
- Medicare Part B Excess Charges- Covering the fees associated with going to a doctor who isn’t fully accepting Medicare

What’s New for 2021?
As 2021 nears, you may want to be aware of what would be different about Medicare Supplements for the upcoming year.
You should know that a lot of information specific to Medicare Supplements for 2021 isn’t available just yet.
For instance, we cannot tell you what the rates for Medicare Supplements will be in 2021.
We don’t have that information yet, but when we do, it will be available on this site for you to use, and you’ll be able to compare the rates from one insurance company to another and easily find the lowest price on the plan you are wanting.
The rates do change every year or so, and you can definitely expect 2021’s rates to be higher than those of previous years.
That’s just inflation at work for you, and our site will list quotes for a number of different insurance companies for you.
That way, you can see how they all compare and then choose the cheapest one.
You may see some insurance companies offer a different lineup of Supplement plans for 2021 as well.
Some of them may decide to drop a plan or two from their lineup and then add some plans to make up for the loss.
Most insurance companies offer a few different Supplement plans, giving their customers a range of high and low options to pick from, but none of them are going to offer all eight of the Supplement plans that Medicare has created.
Another thing that has changed is the list of available plans.
Recently, Medicare dropped plans F and C, and they are considered delisted plans.
What that means for seniors is that these two plans are not available to the general public.
The only people who can even benefit from them are the ones who were enrolled in these plans before they became delisted.
If they stuck with those plans, then they can still enroll in them for 2021. Everyone else has to choose something else.
The reason these two plans were delisted was because of their lack of value.
They were simply priced too high to be of much value to consumers.
Even though they offered the most coverage available, they are being sold at often ridiculously high prices and were some of the worst options for seniors seeking high coverage medical insurance.
The Best Plans to Know about
Which of the Supplement plans are the best?
We want to tell you about two plans that really stand out as high value plans.
That’s not saying that they are the best choices for every senior, as some people simply don’t need the kind of coverage that they offer.
However, if you need lots of coverage from your medical insurance plan, then these two plans we are going to tell you about are going to give you the best value for your money.
Plan G – If you are looking for the best Medicare Supplement plans 2021 is offering, then Plan G should be one of your first choices.
It covers so many medical benefits for you, and that is why it is the most popular Supplement these days.
Plan G covers seniors for all Medicare Part A expenses, and then for several Part B expenses, including excess charges and all copayments.
It also covers the cost of nursing care coinsurance, foreign travel exchange and three pints of blood each year.
Plan G is generally going to cost around $150 a month, but you can get it for even less than that.
You just need to source some Plan G quotes and compare them for your local area to find the best deals.
Plan N – If you want to squeeze as much value from your Medicare Supplement as possible, then you should be considering Plan N.
This one covers most supplemental expenses, but it also leaves a few for you to pay on your own.
We like to call Plan N the “no-fluff Supplement” since it doesn’t bother to cover those medical expenses that are simply unnecessary for most people.
Plan N covers all the Medicare Part A expenses, just like Plan G does.
It will only cover some Medicare Part B expenses, though, covering just a few of the copayments for you.
It will also be able to cover you for the blood you use, for foreign travel exchange costs and for nursing care coinsurance.
We like Plan N because of its very non-nonsense coverage and how it focuses on the essentials.
Plan N costs $111 a month, on average.
It will save you money over Plan G, not just because it is cheaper each month but because those medical expenses it does not cover are cheaper for you to pay for out of pocket.
Let’s compare these two plans that are often considered the best, and you can see the kind of savings you’ll be able to enjoy by choosing one plan over another.

Comparing Plan G and Plan N
The average costs for these two plans are $150 for Plan G and $111 for Plan N.
These are monthly costs, and then you have the leftover Medicare costs on top of that, like any deductibles and premiums that are not covered.
Neither of these plans will cover the Medicare Part B deductible.
This annual cost is just $198, though, so it’s one of the more affordable supplemental medical benefits.
The copayments that Medicare Supplement Plan N does not cover that Medicare Supplement Plan G does cover are just two.
These are the $20 copay for doctor’s visits and then the $50 copay for emergency room visits.
Plan N covers all the other copayments for you.
The other expense that Plan N does not cover that Plan G does is the Medicare Part B excess charges.
These are what you have to pay if you go to a doctor’s office and receive Part B outpatient care, but that doctor does not fully accept Medicare.
This is becoming less and less common, as more and more doctors agree to Medicare’s term and accept Medicare insurance plans.
So, while Supplement Plan G is the higher coverage plan, it doesn’t really justify the higher monthly cost.
The medical benefits it provides that Plan N does not are either very small or very rare.
For most people, it doesn’t make sense to sign up for Plan G when Plan N is available.
This is why we consider Plan N to be the best of the Supplement plans for 2021.
Is it right for you, though?
That’s the question you’ll need to be asking yourself.
The first consideration as to whether Plan N is a good choice or not is whether it will cover those medical expenses that are relevant to you.
Look at what you are paying for out of pocket or what you are at risk for having to pay and then compare that to what Plan N will cover.
Is Plan N able to meet your needs or is it covering too much?
You also have to look at the price.
You can source some quotes right here on our site.
Just search for Plan N or whichever Medicare Supplement you are interested in.
In just a few moments, you will get a whole list of quotes to peruse.
You can look through that list and find the cheapest option for your area.
This is how you’ll save a bunch of money and find out if a Supplement plan is within your budget or not.
